post-consumer waste
Our paper is made with post-consumer waste – meaning we are turning your trash into our tools. You'll notice that our paper is speckled. The natural flecks in our paper are not only beautiful, but make a difference on our Earth and in your life.

Sustainability FAQ
Post-consumer waste is the waste produced after a product has been used by a consumer. It is the waste that we all throw away and would end up in a landfill if it was not recycled and reused. It shows up in our tools as the natural specks that will see in our paper. This is different than pre-consumer waste which is the waste produced by manufacturers when creating a product. Both forms of waste can be recycled and reused.
Post-consumer directly helps reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills. There are brands that don't use recycled paper which requires the cutting down of trees. There are also brands that use 100% recycled paper but the majority use 100% pre-consumer waste. This is better than not using recycled paper but not as impactful as using post-consumer waste because manufacturers are incentivized to recycle and reuse their waste to lower their costs. We are different because we are consciously choosing to use post-consumer waste that would otherwise end up in a landfill. Using post-consumer waste actually increases the cost of our goods because the recycled material needs to be purchased from recycling facilities. The extra cost is more than worth it to help create a more sustainable planet.
All of our tools contain at least 30% post-consumer waste and some contain 100% post-consumer waste. If a tool only contains 30% post-consumer waste, then the remaining is made from pre-consumer waste. That means that all of our tools are 100% recycled and no additional trees were cut down to make them.
Although all of our tools are 100% recycled with pre and post-consumer waste, we still recognize that trees were cut down to create the pre-consumer waste that we use. It only seems right to put the resources back into the Earth that we are an active participant in taking. Plus it can't hurt to have more trees! Trees produce oxygen, help fight climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide, improve our water supply, and much more.
We have partnered with One Tree Planted, a nonprofit organization with a focus on global reforestation, to plant one tree for every order we receive. Our trees are planted all over the world and the exact location is determined by One Tree Planted based on where the most urgent need is. When trees are planted in the right place, at the right time, and for the right reasons, they can help address many of the environmental and social challenges we face.
A top priority for us is to be plastic free by the end of 2024. Currently, whenever possible, we use plant-based, compostable clear sleeves to protect our products. Unfortunately, due to the lack of eco-friendly clear sleeve sizes that are currently produced by our supplier, we do still use clear sleeves for a handful of our goods. We have found a solution to replace the clear sleeves with 100% recycled paper packaging. We are currently in the process of transitioning away from the clear sleeves for good. The packaging for all of our new tools will be plastic free and as we reorder into our current goods we will be updating the packaging solution to be plastic free as well. The transition will be complete by the end of this year.
As an online brand it is a necessity for us to rely on shipping partners to transport our goods to their final home. We recognize that this increases carbon emissions that contribute to climate change. In order to offset this environmental footprint, we have partnered with Pachama whose mission is to solve climate change by restoring nature. They calculate the total emissions generated from shipping your order, based off the weight and distance. We then donate to Pachama who contributes those donations to forest protection initiatives that will offset the carbon that was initially emitted.
